Lake Garda (its area 370sqm, 2,5-17,5km wide and 346m deep) is the largest and most popular Italian lake. By the Romans is was called "Lacus Benacus". It is situated in the valley among the Regions Veneto, Lombardia and Trentino Alto-Adige.
Lake Garda is the ideal point of departure to visit the northern Italian Cities: in 1,5 hours you reach Milan and Venice and Verona, the town of Romeo and Juliet is only a 20 minutes ride from the lake.
The River Sarca in the north shore, as the main tributary, gives water to Lake Garda and in the south the River Mincio takes the water of the Lake into the River Po.
The east shore of the Lake Garda belongs to the Province Veneto and it is called "Olive Riviera" (Riviera di Olivi), the west shore of the Lake belongs to Lombardia and is called the "Lemon Riviera" (Riviera di Limone). The north part of the Lake is fjord-narrow and spreads onto the south. The north part is surrounded by mountains and appears to be a fjord. The south part, thanks its glacier origin, looks like an inland sea.

The shores of Lake Garda are very densely populated, especially in the south.
